The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a warning to consumers regarding TRE House brand Magic Mushroom gummies, chocolate bars, and syrup. The department states these products contain synthetic psychedelic compounds that can cause severe illness, hospitalization, or even death.

According to CDPH, laboratory tests found the products include an analogue of psilocin—a substance classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Schedule I drug. Specifically, all tested products contained 4-Acetoxy-DET (4-Acetoxy-N,N-diethyltryptamine), and most also included 4-Acetoxy-DMT (4-Acetoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine). Both are illegal psychedelic drugs.

“These food products have the potential to cause severe adverse health effects, including hospitalization and even death. The risk of misuse, overuse, or negative interactions with other medications is high, especially without oversight or consultation with medical professionals. They may be particularly dangerous for young children who may consume them under the assumption that these are typical candies and syrup,” CDPH stated.

No illnesses linked to these products have been reported so far. However, CDPH expressed concern for individuals seeking therapeutic effects from psychedelic mushrooms: “While no illnesses have yet been reported, CDPH is concerned that individuals looking for psychedelic mushroom products for therapeutic effects run the risk of serious or life-threatening illness if they consume this product.”

CDPH has begun investigating TRE House and its contract manufacturers in Chatsworth, California. The affected TRE House brand items were marketed as containing a “Magic Mushroom Microdose Blend” and “Proprietary Nootropic Mushroom Blend.” Laboratory analysis confirmed that these chocolate bars contained synthetic mushroom-based psychoactive substances.

As part of its response, more than 1,000 pounds of TRE House brand gummies were embargoed and voluntarily destroyed. Authorities indicated that those responsible could face further enforcement actions such as civil or criminal penalties pending ongoing investigation.

The adulterated TRE House products identified by laboratory testing include:

– Chocolate Bar (Peanut Butter flavor), 1.76 ounces (UPC: 810135374439)
– Chocolate Bar (Chocolate Milk flavor), 1.76 ounces (UPC: 810135370004)
