The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will increase its presence on state roads during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, deploying all available officers to address impaired driving. The enforcement effort begins at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, August 29, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 1. This initiative aligns with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

“Every available CHP officer will be on the road this Labor Day weekend with one mission: to stop impaired drivers before they harm themselves or others,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee in a statement. “If you choose to drive under the influence, expect to be stopped, arrested and held accountable. No excuses, no warnings. Lives are on the line.”

In recent years, Labor Day weekends have seen an average of 1,000 DUI arrests statewide and about 28 fatal crashes resulting in more than 30 deaths within CHP jurisdiction. Last year’s enforcement period recorded 61 fatalities, with 21 attributed to impaired driving. Officers made 1,140 DUI arrests during that time.

Authorities are asking motorists to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.

The CHP stated that its ongoing mission is to provide safety, service, and security for all travelers on California roadways.
