On September 18, 2025, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved close to $200,000 in Digital Divide Grants for community programs throughout California. The grants are aimed at providing Chromebooks, tablets, and digital skills training directly to students, parents, and seniors in low-income communities.

During the public Voting Meeting where these grants were approved, CPUC officials discussed the significance of these efforts.

President Alice Reynolds stated that bridging the digital divide requires a comprehensive approach. She emphasized that this initiative is part of California’s ongoing effort to realize Broadband for All across the state.

Commissioner Darcie L. Houck highlighted that these programs target students and families in underserved areas. She noted that for many in these communities, access to a laptop or tablet represents new opportunities.

Commissioner John Reynolds described the practical effects of the grants. He explained how resources such as Chromebooks and headphones for students, as well as training sessions for parents and seniors, would have tangible everyday benefits.

The stories behind each grant illustrate broader goals: enabling students to complete homework on their own devices; helping parents become more confident with online tools; and allowing seniors to stay connected with family members through improved digital skills.

These Digital Divide Grants are part of a larger set of CPUC initiatives designed to ensure Californians have access to technology needed for education and connection. The program complements other efforts focused on infrastructure development and affordability so every resident has an opportunity to participate fully in today’s digital society.

More information about the program can be found on the CPUC’s Digital Divide Grant Program webpage.
