The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced it will conduct a pedestrian safety operation in Stanislaus County, specifically targeting the Salida area on Thursday. The focus of the operation is to ensure that drivers comply with traffic laws related to pedestrian safety.
Officers will be observing motorists for violations such as failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians or engaging in unsafe or illegal actions, according to a statement from CHP.
“Pedestrian-involved crashes in California continue to be a major concern for the CHP,” the agency said in the release. “From January 2023 through December 2023, preliminary data revealed 41 injury crashes involving pedestrians, including fatal crashes within CHP Modesto jurisdiction.”
The CHP stated that the goal of this initiative is to “educate and encourage” community members to practice safe behaviors whether they are driving, walking, or riding bicycles.
The operation reflects ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety and efforts by law enforcement to reduce accidents and fatalities involving pedestrians.
