The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has opened the application process for a vacancy on the Diablo Canyon Independent Safety Committee. The position is for a three-year term beginning on or after July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2029.

The committee evaluates the safety of operations at Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Its responsibilities include reviewing quarterly reports, conducting on-site inspections, and making annual recommendations. These recommendations are first sent to PG&E and then shared with the Governor of California, the California Attorney General, the California Energy Commission (CEC), and the CPUC.

The committee is made up of three members. Each member is appointed in turn by either the Governor of California, the California Attorney General, or the Chair of the CEC. This year’s application is for a candidate to be nominated by the Governor.

Applicants must have expertise in nuclear power plants and nuclear safety issues. The application form can be found on the CPUC website at https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/industries-and-topics/electrical-energy/electric-costs/what-are-nuclear-electric-cost under “Diablo Canyon Independent Safety Committee,” or requested via email at jonathan.wardrip@cpuc.ca.gov.

Applications should be submitted by February 9, 2026.

The CPUC will allow public comment on qualified applications by posting information about each applicant on its website shortly after receipt. The public comment period will last for 20 days.

According to its mission statement, “The CPUC regulates services and utilities, protects consumers, safeguards the environment, and assures Californians access to safe and reliable utility infrastructure and services.” More information about CPUC can be found at www.cpuc.ca.gov.
