An elderly woman was injured after being attacked by a dog while walking her pet on Estep Drive in Modesto, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Police spokesperson Sharon Bear said officers responded just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, to a hospital where the woman was receiving treatment. She sustained moderate injuries when a Cane Corso, an Italian breed of mastiff, broke through a backyard fence and attacked her.

Bear stated that witnesses nearby helped contain the dog and stayed with the woman until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The owner of the dog was contacted, and the animal has been seized and placed in quarantine at the Stanislaus County Animal Shelter.
