Elizabeth Auer has worked at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for three years and currently serves as a Staff Services Manager I in the Consumer Affairs Branch, based in Sacramento. She leads a team of analysts responsible for reviewing trends in consumer complaints and providing feedback to improve the efficiency of the complaint process.
Auer highlighted the impact of her team’s work, stating, “What we do directly makes a difference in consumers’ lives. Consumer Affairs is on the front lines, working directly with the community. How we handle calls and what information we communicate makes the difference when assisting with high-ticketed issues. When we help even just one person resolve a problem, that’s a win for us.”
When asked about valuable career advice she has received, Auer shared: “Don’t chase job titles – build skills. Titles can change, companies can restructure, and industries evolve. But the skills you intentionally build stay with you everywhere you go, and those are what make a difference.”
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Auer enjoys outdoor activities such as golfing and participates in tournaments. On days when weather keeps her indoors, she spends time on crochet or cross stitch projects.
Auer also revealed that she is professionally trained in classical dance and dedicates time outside work to teaching teenagers competitive dance at a local studio or coaching a high school dance team. She described this experience as rewarding: “Having the opportunity to teach my passion to youth is an incredible experience. I continue to learn from them every day.”
She recommended “Letting Go” by David R. Hawkins as her favorite book, describing it as beneficial for spiritual development and personal growth.
