San Jose offers a variety of family attractions that combine learning and play, according to Monet Hambrick of The Traveling Child. She discussed her recent trip to the region with her two daughters on the California Now Podcast, sharing highlights from several educational and interactive destinations.

The Tech Interactive in San Jose is recognized for its hands-on STEM experiences for visitors of all ages. It received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2015, which is the highest national honor given to museums and libraries in the United States. At “The Tech,” families can design robots, experiment with digital art, and participate in activities like becoming Cyber Detectives to learn about internet safety.

Nearby, the Children’s Discovery Museum provides younger children with opportunities for creative play through exhibits such as a fire truck, an international food market, and sensory areas like the Wonder Cabinet and Crawl Space.

About 72 miles south of San Jose is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Supported by the Packard Foundation since its founding, this aquarium houses more than 35,000 sea creatures across 200 exhibits. Its conservation programs are complemented by attractions such as Splash Zone and live penguin cameras.

In San Francisco, Pier 39 stands out as a central waterfront destination offering views of landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. Families can visit Aquarium of the Bay to see local marine life or enjoy various restaurants known for their seafood offerings.

Also located in San Francisco is the California Academy of Sciences within Golden Gate Park. This institution combines an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest dome, research center, and natural history museum. It features sustainability initiatives through green building operations and animal breeding programs alongside exhibits like Steinhart Aquarium’s Twilight Zone and Kimball Natural History Museum’s Color of Life display.
