As the holiday season approaches, many in Stanislaus County may be considering a change of scenery for their winter break. Several destinations within roughly 90 minutes of Stanislaus offer options for both couples and families seeking a nearby getaway.

Arnold, located near the Sierra Nevada, is known for its snowy conditions during winter. The area features numerous cabins and cottages available through rental platforms such as AirBnb and Vrbo. Arnold also provides opportunities for snow sports including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowmobiling. Holiday events in Arnold include the Spirit of Winter Festival from December 5-7, kids crafting with Santa on December 14, and a fireplace gathering at Jack Knight Hall serving hot cocoa and cider from December 20 to January 4. Recommended local restaurants are Sarafina’s Italian Kitchen, Snowshoe Brewing Company, El Vaquero Authentic Mexican, and Bristol’s Ranch House Cafe.

Murphys is another option on the edge of the Stanislaus National Forest. The town offers inns such as the Victoria Inn, Dunbar House Inn, and Courtwood Inn. Visitors can shop at locally owned stores like Independent Mercantile and Murphys Treasures or explore Gold Rush historical sites. Wine tasting is also popular in the area. For those interested in theater, Murphys Creek Theater is presenting “Over the River and Through the Woods” through December 14 with tickets available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Dining choices include Alchemy Cafe, Murphys Irish Pub, Murphys Pourhouse, and V Restaurant Bistro and Bar.

The Pajaro Dunes Resort near Watsonville sits on Monterey Bay beach and caters to those looking for hiking or relaxation by the ocean. Nearby attractions include Sierra Azul Nursery’s sculpture garden and cider tasting at Martinelli’s Company Store. Whale watching at Moss Landing or visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium are other options within reach. Due to limited dining options at Pajaro Dunes itself, visitors often eat in Watsonville at places like Cowboy Corners Cafe or bring groceries to prepare meals onsite. Local holiday events feature Noche de Brillo (Night of Sparkle) on December 14 in Watsonville city plaza with activities such as train rides and a holiday parade; Santa Cruz Fairgrounds hosts holiday lights displays through late December.

Pinecrest Lake Resort offers accommodations close to outdoor activities around Stanislaus National Forest including hiking trails around Pinecrest Lake or skiing at Dodge Ridge Mountain Resort. Dodge Ridge will hold its annual Santa Sunday event on December 21 where participants dressed as Santa ski down Gentle Ben slope. Leland Snowplay provides tubing opportunities while Long Barn Lodge operates an ice-skating rink until mid-March. Dining options are more limited but include Strawberry Inn Restaurant and Steam Donkey Restaurant and Bar.

In Sonora, travelers can stay at inns like The Inn on Knowles Hill or Royal Olive Manor while participating in Christmas Town celebrations that offer free carriage rides during select Fridays in December starting from St. James Episcopal Church or Courthouse Square. Other seasonal activities include Country Christmas Line Dancing on December 18 at the Armory as well as last-minute shopping markets later in the month at Mother Lode Fairgrounds. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park brings “The Polar Express” story to life with themed train rides from November 28 to December 21 featuring an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

Sonora also houses Tuolumne County museum for those interested in local history; Moaning Caverns Adventure Park nearby offers cave tours among other activities such as gold panning or axe throwing. Restaurants recommended in Sonora are Diamondback Grill, Mandy’s Breakfast House, Emberz, and The Armory.

“Tickets are ‘pay what you can,'” said representatives of Murphys Creek Theater regarding their production running through Dec. 14.

For those seeking a winter escape not far from home this season—whether it involves snow sports or coastal walks—these five destinations present several possibilities close to Stanislaus County.
