IAM District 6 has increased its involvement in supporting homeless veterans by designating the Des Moines Stand Down as an official District HELPS event for 2025. This follows last year’s backpack drive, expanding the union’s efforts to provide assistance to veterans experiencing homelessness.

IAM Locals throughout District 6 contributed funds, which were matched by the district, resulting in a total donation of $1,150 along with additional supplies. The organization noted that $750 is enough to provide approximately 500 meals for individuals in need.

Thirteen members from three IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their responsibilities included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery. The event served more than 500 people, including both veterans and civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM members worked alongside other volunteers to help ensure that veterans and their families received care and essential services intended to support them in the coming months. District 6 is encouraging other IAM districts and locals to support Homeless Veterans Stand Down events within their own communities.
