IAM members from various regions and industries gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to participate in the IAM Young Workers Program. The event, organized by IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director Dee Colbert, aimed to support members interested in starting Young Worker Committees within their local unions.

Colbert explained the purpose of the initiative: “This initiative is designed to engage and empower the next generation of union members by providing them with exposure to a wide range of departments, leaders, and opportunities within our movement. It is imperative that we give young workers meaningful experiences that deepen their understanding of union values and help shape their leadership mindset as they prepare for long, successful careers in the labor movement.”

During the weeklong program, participants engaged in training sessions covering topics such as IAM history, strategic planning, parliamentary procedure, generational diversity, public speaking, organizing on issues relevant to workers, economics, human rights, and committee development. Experienced educators from IAM led these sessions to ensure practical learning and an understanding of union principles.

Attendees were divided into groups tasked with creating strategic plans for forming Young Worker Committees in their respective locals. Some groups used creative approaches such as podcasts to present their projects and demonstrate new ways to reach younger audiences.

The IAM Communications Department provided instruction on effective messaging strategies to help participants communicate with members and promote committee activities upon returning home.

Senior IAM officials including General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes, Special Assistant Bryan Pinette, and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen visited the center during the program. They shared personal experiences about their involvement in the union and encouraged young members to remain active within the organization.
