Ceres police are investigating a homicide after a shooting at Riverview Park early Wednesday left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2 a.m. in the 2700 block of Riverpark Drive, according to a news release from the Ceres Police Department. Upon arrival, they found one man deceased in the roadway. A second man with multiple gunshot wounds was discovered nearby and transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Police said patrol officers secured the area while detectives began their investigation at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates that a group had gathered at Riverview Park when several unidentified males arrived in a vehicle. During an ensuing confrontation, shots were fired, resulting in two victims being struck. Detectives are still working to determine the motive, but initial findings suggest gang involvement may be connected to the incident.

The department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Welsh at 209-538-5616.
