A man was killed Tuesday morning after being hit by a Union Pacific train in downtown Turlock, according to the Turlock Police Department.

Department spokesperson Dominique Sanchez said the incident occurred at about 8:29 a.m. at North Broadway and North Front Street. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators have not yet determined how the man came to be on the tracks. “It’s still very early on,” Sanchez said.

Several railroad crossings were closed during the investigation, including Golden State Boulevard at Fulkerth Road, Front Street at Broadway, and Front Street at Canal Drive. Police and Union Pacific officials urged drivers to use alternate routes and expect delays while they conducted their investigation.

In an update posted on Facebook at 11:15 a.m., police stated that their investigation was complete and officers had cleared the area. However, the train remained stopped as Union Pacific awaited a new conductor, with no set timeline for when it would move again.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased once family members have been notified.
