As 2025 comes to a close, a Modesto Bee reporter reflected on the year’s coverage, including a series focused on affordable activities in the Modesto area. The “On a Budget” series highlighted experiences around Stanislaus County that could be enjoyed for $25 or less.
Among the featured spots was Con Azucar Cafe, located at 10th and K streets in Modesto. The cafe offers a Mexican-inspired menu with coffee starting at $3 and specialty lattes up to $7. Food options include sandwiches and traditional sweet breads. During one visit, the reporter ordered a torta de jamon and a Duvalin specialty latte for $20.50; after taxes, service fees, and tip, the total came to $24.50.
El Rematito relaunched its Artisanal Night Market in May at 3113 Crows Landing Road. The Friday night event features food vendors, handcrafted goods, and free admission. Purchases included three beef chalupas for $6, Dubai chocolate strawberries for $14, and hair accessories for $4, totaling $24.
Pottery Magic Modesto was another stop on the budget tour. The studio offers paint-your-own ceramics with prices starting at $2.50 and most items under $30. Weekly deals help customers save money; on Wednesdays guests can draw discounts such as free studio fees or up to 20% off purchases. On one visit, the reporter drew a free studio fee card and paid cash to avoid extra charges—spending $19.60 in total.
A reader suggestion led to Posh Bagel, where bagels start at under $2 each and sandwiches range from about $6 to $12. Drinks include coffee and teas from under $3 up to just over $6. A meal of chicken pesto melt sandwich, iced coffee, and three bagels cost just over $24 after tax and tip.
In October, the Resendiz Family Fruit Barn in Hughson offered autumn activities like pumpkin picking with no admission or parking fees. While some attractions required wristbands costing between $15-$25, pumpkins were available from as low as $2 each with special deals inside the store on baked goods starting at just $2.
The reporter invited readers to suggest more budget-friendly destinations by email or through an online form.
