At Modesto City Schools, the approach to parent engagement focuses on partnership between families and schools. The district’s Parent Engagement & Outreach (PEO) Department leads efforts to provide parents with resources and opportunities to become active participants in their children’s education.

The PEO Department offers workshops, meetings, and resources aimed at building stronger connections between families and educators. These efforts include districtwide trainings and school-based programs that help parents learn about student supports and community resources.

One of the department’s main initiatives is Parents Make a Difference, which gives families the chance to meet with principals and school staff. During these meetings, parents can discuss academic and wellness supports, ask questions, and provide feedback.

Another program, the Parent Ambassador Program (PAP), involves 13 ambassadors who act as liaisons between families and schools. The ambassadors receive training from PEO staff and help parents navigate resources, share updates about district programs, and encourage involvement in school activities. They also attend monthly meetings for further training and collaboration.

According to the district, these initiatives have led to increased parent attendance at events, greater access to services for families, and stronger relationships built on trust.

After participating in a Parents Make a Difference meeting at Gregori High School, one parent said, “It was good to hear about all the resources the school offers.” Another parent from Martone Elementary stated, “I just really appreciate the time and effort put into everything. It was informative and showed a true sense of purpose you have for our community and youth.”

PEO Director Madie Herrera emphasized the importance of family engagement: “We see parents as our most valued and influential partners in their child’s academic success and overall well-being,” she said. “When families are engaged, they’re empowered, and that empowerment ripples outward, strengthening our schools and our entire community.”

The department’s work is part of Modesto City Schools’ broader commitment to equity and inclusion by ensuring all families have access to information and a voice in decisions affecting students.
