Work on the $18 million renovation of the Modesto Library is moving forward, with asbestos remediation now completed, according to Laura Ferrell, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County library system. The project is expected to allow the main library to reopen in summer or fall 2026.
The library was temporarily closed for modernization on November 30, 2024. Preparations this month include fireproofing installations, upgrades to heating and air-conditioning ducts, and creating accessible parking spaces for people with disabilities.
In addition to these improvements, the renovation will feature retrofitted elevators, upgraded lighting, a redesigned floor plan, and new furnishings.
Friends of the Modesto Library recently announced that its Lifelong Legacy fundraising campaign has reached its $3 million goal. This campaign received support from more than 30 major donors and hundreds of individual contributors. The funds raised will go toward enhancements such as a reimagined early childhood space, durable furnishings, and technical upgrades for public meeting rooms and reading areas.
The overall project is funded by county resources, state grants, and library reserves. The Lifelong Legacy campaign provides additional support for specific improvements beyond the core renovation work.
Lynn Dickerson and Katy Menges led outreach efforts to large donors for the campaign. In a news release they stated that many community members made generous donations “to make the community better for everyone and support a library enjoyed by people of all ages.”
Eric Benson contributed in memory of his late wife Carol. “She was my wife and friend for over 40 years and devoted her life to teaching reading,” he said. “She inspired hundreds of children through her work. Honoring her legacy by continuing this mission is a fitting tribute that will help many more experience the joy of reading.”
During the closure, an Express Library opened at Tenth Street Plaza downtown. Cardholders can continue using the library website to place holds on books or other materials for pickup at their preferred branch location.
Donations are still being accepted for the Lifelong Legacy campaign. Gifts of $1,000 or more will be acknowledged on a donor wall inside the renovated library. Further information can be found at modestolibraryfriends.org/legacy.
