The city of Modesto has announced options for residents looking to dispose of large household items, such as old mattresses or broken appliances, during the holiday season. The Bulky Item Collection Program is available to single-family households, allowing them to schedule two pickups per year.
Residents can use this service to get rid of items that do not fit in their regular trash collection. To arrange a pickup, individuals must contact their waste hauler and set an appointment. All items should be placed on the street against the curb directly in front of the residence without blocking sidewalks, driveways, fire hydrants, storm drains or garbage cans. Items will not be collected if they are placed in an alley.
“Please do not place items out for collection until 6 p.m. the evening before your scheduled appointment,” the city stated on its website.
For those living in apartments or multi-unit buildings with Dumpsters, Modesto is testing a pilot bulky item pickup program. “This pilot allows us to work through any issues with the program to ensure it does not contribute to illegal dumping or blight and to provide funding for the two years,” according to information provided by the city.
Additionally, Modesto offers a Haul It Yourself Program for residents who prefer transporting their own bulky items directly to a transfer station. Each household is eligible for two vouchers per year under this program. The vouchers allow residents to bring loads no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet and are valid for seven days after being issued.
Single-family home residents can request vouchers from their solid waste company. Those living in multi-family homes should contact their property manager or owner, who can then obtain a voucher through the solid waste provider.
