The Modesto Police Department has announced it will conduct a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location in Modesto from 8 p.m. on Friday to 3 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the department, drivers arrested for a first-time DUI can expect to pay around $13,500 in fines and penalties, which also includes a suspension of their driver’s license. In 2024, the Modesto Police Department reported making 616 DUI arrests. Data from California’s Office of Traffic Safety indicates that in 2022, Modesto had the highest number of DUI collisions resulting in death or injury among comparable cities.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Darien Wilson stated in an MPD press release. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The police department emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol use; driving under the influence of certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or marijuana—whether used medically or recreationally—can also result in a DUI charge.
