Modesto police will increase their patrols starting Friday, Dec. 12, as part of a national effort to prevent impaired driving during the holiday season. The department announced its participation in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which will continue through New Year’s Day. Additional officers will be on duty to identify drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,038 deaths nationwide in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers in December 2023.
“The holiday season can be dangerous for people on the roads,” the department said in a statement. The statement also urged people to celebrate responsibly and avoid driving while impaired.
The campaign is part of a broader national initiative designed to discourage impaired driving and remove unsafe drivers from roadways.
“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” Sgt. Darien Wilson said in a statement. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable. We are asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and everyone on the roads safe.”
Police noted that impairment can result not just from alcohol but also from prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, cannabis products, and other substances that may affect driving ability.
The department advised residents to plan ahead by choosing a sober driver, using public transportation or rideshare services, or staying home if consuming substances that impair driving. Residents who see someone they believe is driving while impaired are encouraged to call 911.
Funding for this enforcement effort comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
