As the holiday season wraps up, Modesto residents are beginning to take down Christmas decorations, including lights that may no longer work or are unwanted for future use. The City of Modesto recently posted a reminder on Facebook about the proper disposal of broken or retired holiday lights.
According to the city’s guidance, residents should not throw holiday lights in any of their trash bins—black, blue, or green. “Holiday lights cannot be disposed of in your black, blue, or green trash bin,” the post says.
Instead of tossing them out with regular garbage, the city advises checking first if the light strands can be donated or recycled. For those unable to reuse or donate their old decorations, two designated locations have been provided for safe disposal.
The city encourages responsible disposal practices to support environmental sustainability: “Together,” the post says, “let’s keep Modesto shining bright AND green.”
