Modesto Centre Plaza will not be accepting event bookings beyond December 2025, leaving the future of the downtown venue in question. City officials have not provided specific reasons for this decision. Sonya Severo, a spokesperson for the city, said, “The future use of the Modesto Centre Plaza is currently being considered” and there are “active conversations” about what will happen to it.
In August, the Modesto City Council selected a downtown location as the site for a professional soccer stadium that would be built at or near Centre Plaza. This plan would require demolishing Centre Plaza, according to previous reporting by The Bee. City and United Soccer League officials aim to start construction in fall 2026 and open the stadium in 2028.
City records show that Centre Plaza hosted 193 events during the 2023-24 fiscal year, including DoubleTree events, city-sponsored events, and its own programming. However, more recent budget documents indicate that post-pandemic averages have dropped to about 120 events per year.
Financially, maintaining Centre Plaza is costly for Modesto. The city’s budget for 2025-26 projects spending around $2.7 million on the facility while expecting only $950,000 in revenue. Funding for events at Centre Plaza has been allocated only through this fiscal year; no funds are projected beyond that point.
Events held at Centre Plaza in recent years have included car shows, motorcycle shows, tattoo conventions, mixed martial arts fights, business awards ceremonies, expos such as Quinceanera Expo and Edible Extravaganza’s return after three years away.
Severo noted that Modesto on Ice—a seasonal ice skating event held in Centre Plaza’s parking lot—will continue as planned from November through February.
While bookings past December are paused at Centre Plaza, other venues remain available elsewhere in Modesto.
