Snap Inc. and the MusĂ©e du Louvre have launched a new augmented reality (AR) experience called “The Incredible Unknowns of the Louvre.” This collaboration builds on a 2023 pilot project that focused on Ancient Egyptian works.

The initiative allows visitors to use their smartphones to interact with six masterpieces in the museum’s collection. By scanning QR codes placed next to the artwork labels, users can access digital features that reveal lost forms, materials, and colors, decode artistic techniques, and view iconic pieces in different ways.

According to Snap Inc., “All of these experiences were designed by Snap’s AR Studio Paris in close collaboration with the MusĂ©e du Louvre curators, based on archival materials and scholarly references. On louvre.fr, additional explanations allow the most curious visitors to deepen their AR experience. This interactive initiative creates a new dialogue between visitors and artworks, offering a fresh way to explore the museum’s collections.”

The project aims to create an innovative and educational encounter for museum-goers. The partnership highlights how technology is being used to enhance visitor engagement with art at major institutions like the Louvre.
