Bitmoji, the digital avatar platform used by more than 320 million people daily, is introducing a new feature called Comic Bitmoji. The update allows Snapchat+ subscribers to switch their avatars to a style that brings back the original 2D comic-inspired look, while retaining the customizability and expressions of current 3D avatars.

The company said it made this change in response to community feedback. Many users have expressed nostalgia for the classic 2D design, with thousands petitioning for its return. “We listened,” Bitmoji stated in its announcement.

Comic Bitmoji acts as a filter for user avatars within Snapchat+. Subscribers will be able to see all Bitmoji avatars in their app displayed in the retro 2D style and send stickers that match this aesthetic to friends.

“For Snapchatters, Bitmoji isn’t just an avatar. It’s your digital identity, the way you show up with friends, share your moods, and represent yourself online. With Comic Bitmoji, we’re giving you more choice in how you express yourself, whether that’s embracing the latest 3D styles or throwing it back to the look that started it all,” according to the statement from Bitmoji.

In recent years, Bitmoji has expanded its customization options. In 2023, it launched a new 3D avatar system on Snapchat with diverse body types, hairstyles, makeup options and other detailed features.

Bitmoji is integrated into various parts of Snapchat including profiles, Snap Map, AR Lenses and chat stickers.
