Extra law enforcement patrols will be in place across Stanislaus County on Halloween to monitor for impaired drivers. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced that all available officers will be on duty from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, focusing on both state highways and county roads in cooperation with sheriff’s deputies.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office has planned a checkpoint at an undisclosed time and location, where all motorists will be required to stop and prove they are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In Modesto, police spokeswoman Sharon Bear said the department will deploy “saturation patrols” but does not plan to set up a checkpoint.

Officials note that with Halloween falling on a Friday this year, there may be more adult parties in addition to traditional trick-or-treating activities. Law enforcement agencies urge residents to designate sober drivers or use alternatives such as public transit or ride-share services. They also encourage the public to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving while impaired. Those arrested for impaired driving could spend the night in jail and face fines or other legal consequences.

The CHP is conducting these extra patrols throughout California during Halloween. According to their data, last year’s statewide Halloween enforcement saw close to 500 crashes investigated, about 90 of which involved impaired drivers. There were two fatalities and approximately 60 injuries reported, with around 120 people arrested for driving under the influence.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee stated, “Impaired driving destroys lives, and even one life lost is one too many,” adding, “This Halloween, we’re asking everyone to do their part before the festivities begin, arrange a sober ride and help us keep California’s roads safe for everyone who uses them.”

Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant for trick-or-treaters as well. In Modesto, sunset will occur at 6:06 p.m. Friday. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, meaning darkness will arrive earlier until March.
