The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office will hold a checkpoint for impaired drivers on Saturday, Jan. 3. The exact location and hours have not been announced. All drivers passing through the checkpoint will be stopped to determine if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The sheriff’s office received funding for this operation from the California Cannabis Tax Fund. While cannabis is legal in California for certain recreational and medicinal uses, it remains illegal to drive while under its influence.
A statement from the sheriff’s office highlighted the risks associated with driving under the influence: “Even worse, a drunk driver can cause a traffic crash that claims someone’s life or even their own,” the release said.
Officials encourage people to plan ahead by arranging for a sober driver if necessary and remind drivers to obey other laws related to cell phone use and seat belts. The public is also asked to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving while impaired.
