Stanislaus State graduate Adrian Harrell has started a two-year term as chair of the California State University (CSU) Alumni Council, representing more than 4 million alumni from the system’s 23 campuses. Harrell, who earned her bachelor’s degrees in sociology and French in 1998, began her leadership role on July 1.
In this position, Harrell is responsible for advocating for the interests of alumni across all CSU campuses while also bringing her perspective as a Stanislaus State alumna. “My time at Stan State prepared me for this leadership opportunity by giving me both a strong academic foundation and meaningful opportunities to grow as a leader,” Harrell said. “As a student, I learned the value of resilience, collaboration and the importance of lifting others as you climb, all lessons that continue to guide me in my professional and service roles today.”
The CSU Alumni Council acts as the official voice for graduates within the university system. It contributes to policy development and ensures alumni perspectives are considered in decision-making processes. The council collaborates with CSU leaders and appoints representatives to groups such as the Board of Trustees, System Budget Advisory Committee, Advocacy Committee, Student Success Initiative, Strategic Planning Committee, California State Student Association, and Academic Senate.
Harrell’s career includes significant involvement with Stanislaus State following her graduation. She worked in Paris before returning to California’s Central Valley. In 2014 she joined Stanislaus State’s Alumni Association; six years later she was elected to its Foundation Board of Directors. In 2024 she received the Presidential Medal from Stanislaus State in recognition of her leadership and support.
Looking ahead at her term with the Alumni Council, Harrell stated: “Looking ahead, the Alumni Council will focus on initiatives that both celebrate the impact of our alumni and advance the mission of the CSU system. By showcasing the stories of alumni who are making meaningful contributions in their communities, industries and beyond, we not only honor our graduates but also illustrate why a CSU degree is such a powerful investment in California’s future.”
She added: “Continuing to advocate for the CSU at local, state and national levels will be critical, as will unifying our alumni community across the state and beyond to create a stronger, interconnected network that reflects the breadth and excellence of our universities.”
