The Turlock Police Department has increased its patrols to identify and stop drivers under the influence during the holiday season. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety at a time when, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,038 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in December 2023.

“The holiday season can be dangerous for people on the roads,” stated a department news release.

To support these efforts, Turlock Police received a $75,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. This funding will help expand enforcement and education programs aimed at reducing serious injuries and deaths related to impaired driving. The grant program will continue through September.

“The Turlock Police Department wants to remind the public of the dangers of driving impaired and to celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence,” said another statement regarding increased patrols.

As part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, additional officers will be on duty through New Year’s Day. Their focus will be on identifying drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” Sgt. Jason Watson said in a statement.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead if they intend to consume substances that could impair their ability to drive—such as alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, or other medications—by designating a sober driver or using public transportation or ride-share services. The department also asks anyone who sees someone appearing to drive while impaired to call 911.

“Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone,” Watson added.

Funding for these patrols comes from both state and federal sources via grants provided by agencies focused on traffic safety.
