Two adults sustained injuries Friday morning following a propane tank explosion that led to a fire involving a van or RV in Modesto, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

Firefighters were called at 7:18 a.m. to the 1200 block of Roselawn Avenue. Officials reported that the two individuals had been transferring propane from a larger, approximately 20-pound tank into a smaller camping-sized tank using an adapter.

Authorities said that during this process, propane leaked from the tank while there was an open candle nearby. The leaking gas came into contact with the flame, resulting in an explosion that caused burn injuries to both people and started a fire.

The incident damaged the outside of the van or RV as well as personal belongings in the area, officials stated.

Both injured adults were taken by ambulance to local hospitals for medical care. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

Responding units included a Modesto Fire engine, a battalion chief, Medic 1, and members of the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit.
