The University of California, Merced has announced it has received a $38 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, marking the largest philanthropic donation in the university’s history. This is Scott’s second major contribution to UC Merced, following her $20 million gift in 2021. The latest commitment highlights national recognition of UC Merced as an innovative public research institution and leader in expanding access and opportunity for students.

The new funds will be used to support research initiatives, develop teaching spaces, and provide assistance to students from diverse backgrounds, including many who are first-generation college attendees. The previous donation from Scott helped the university advance student support programs, expand research capacity, and facilitate campus growth.

Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz said, “This remarkable act of generosity affirms what we know to be true – UC Merced is changing lives, uplifting families, and reshaping what is possible for California and beyond. We are profoundly grateful for Ms. Scott’s continued trust in our mission and for her belief in our faculty, students and the extraordinary promise of higher education.”

The university plans to use this new funding to accelerate student success initiatives aimed at reducing barriers for students with significant financial need. It will also enhance faculty research programs and experiential learning opportunities that prepare graduates for evolving workforce demands. Additionally, the funds will support capital projects intended to expand research facilities and improve student spaces as the campus grows.

The $38 million donation comes at a pivotal time as UC Merced undertakes its first comprehensive fundraising campaign called Boldly Forward. This campaign seeks to increase resources for students, faculty, and the Central Valley community while strengthening the university’s reputation as a leading R1 public research institution.

UC President James B. Milliken stated, “UC Merced is a powerful example of what public higher education can achieve when access and excellence move hand in hand. Ms. Scott’s landmark gift will strengthen the university’s ability to open doors, change lives and expand opportunity across the Central Valley and beyond. We are deeply grateful for her leadership and generosity.”
