The University of California Board of Regents has opened the application process for the 2027-28 student regent position. The student regent serves as a full voting member on the university’s governing board, representing students from all 10 campuses.

All University of California students are eligible to apply for this role, which includes a stipend and a waiver of systemwide tuition and fees during the two-year term. The application deadline is March 8, 2026.

The position consists of a one-year non-voting term as regent-designate, followed by a one-year voting term. Benefits include the opportunity to represent nearly 300,000 students in board decisions, influence university policy, and advocate for issues such as access and affordability. Students also gain experience in leadership and governance.

An informational webinar will be held on January 29, 2026. Interested students can register to learn more about the role from current student regents and ask questions about the application process.

Student Regent Sonya Brooks said, “We hope every student who is interested in this position will join us for the webinar, and then apply for the position. It’s so important that UC’s governing board include a passionate, outspoken student who wants to make a difference.”

Questions about the application can be directed to studentregentapplication@ucop.edu.
