Windsor, a town in Sonoma County, recently avoided major damage from the Kincade fire due to efforts by firefighters. Known for its walkable Old Downtown filled with shops and restaurants, Windsor has been described by the online magazine 7X7 as “a charming, Mr. Rogers–level friendly pocket of Sonoma County that has all the wine country essentials (plus lots of beer) without crowds or a trace of snobbery.”
One highlight for visitors is Windsor’s craft beer scene. The town welcomed an outpost of Russian River Brewing earlier this year, which is notable for being one of the few locations to offer the annual February release of Pliny the Younger, a triple IPA. The brewpub features a one-acre beer garden, tours, an extensive food menu, and always has Pliny the Elder double IPA on tap. Other local breweries include Barrel Brothers Brewing and Cuver Brewing.
Wine enthusiasts can visit Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards, which combines Russian River Valley characteristics with Burgundian winemaking traditions. Visitors are able to enjoy guided tastings and stroll through vineyard paths. The estate also offers croquet matches on its lawns while guests sample Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside cheese and charcuterie.
For those seeking accommodations, 7X7 referred to the renovated Holiday Inn Express Windsor as “the nicest Holiday Inn you’ll ever stay in… and it’s a steal.”
Dining options in Windsor include Kin’s fried-pickle Frickles and Sweet T’s smoked meats and key lime pie martinis. Sweet T’s relocated to Windsor after burning down in the 2017 Tubbs fire. KC’s American Kitchen was called “the Cheers of Windsor” by 7X7 for its welcoming atmosphere and hearty breakfasts such as Benedicts served atop potato pancakes.
